George Byrne @ National Underground

This past Saturday night after painting at the studio, I went to the Library Bar with some friends. After lots of chatting amongst the group, I moved my conversation to a few people who were next to us. George Byrne, who first caught my eye by wearing red pants, is a very talented musician from Australia. He's influenced by Ryan Adams and is a singer songwriter, playing both acoustic guitar and the harmonica.

Thanks to the networking of Kiss The Sky Inc., George played a set at the National Underground, a new venue in the L.E.S. I went with my friend CeCe of 80%20 fame, and we both melted at his dreamy poetics, croons, and alternate toe tapping. Songs on love and loss...travelin'-leaving and coming back. I swayed, and followed the beat with head side to side and hand on my thigh. I thought of Ryan Adams, Sean Lennon, Eliot Morris, and a slight lyrical resemblance to Adam Duritz.

George is scheduled to play another show at the National Underground this coming Saturday (July 19th). Knowing that he is being courted by the folks at MTV and Universal Music Group, I highly recommend catching this star...while still within our reach.

Edward Smith: "So, what, painting is an excuse to listen to really good music?"

Andy Warhol: "Oh, yeah."

Yes!

I watched one of Andy's early films today..where his subject, Gerard Malanga takes the role of pre-Clock Work Orange, and is objectified, and made to wear a leather S&M mask and be burned with candle wax....oh that Andy! ;)
